TODAY'S WORD FOR Friday, April 19, 2019:
The end of life on this earth; cessation of physical or spiritual life.
So, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,” IT IS FINISHED.” And bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Today is Good Friday and each year on this day we celebrate the death of Jesus on the cross. We celebrate because God sent His Son, Jesus, to this world to die on the cross to take all the sins of mankind upon Himself. Jesus shed His blood to pay the debt for the sins of all believers of Jesus Christ for all time.
Three days later is what we call Easter Sunday, the day that Jesus rose from the dead as He had promised. What a day for celebration.
Jesus was unique in His death. He underwent the greatest of public indignations as well as physical agonies. His faultless behavior at His death gives testimony through the ages that He was “Truly a righteous man.” Nowhere in history or literature is there a nobler account than that of Jesus’ obedience to His father by facing the cross and then dying on it.
As the Messiah Jesus died for His people’s sins fulfilling the detailed prophecy of David written about 1,000 years prior (Psalm 22). He also fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah (Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12).
Jesus prophesied His own death and said that it would be for the sins of many (Mark 10:45 and Matthew 10:17-18).
Jesus death did fulfill prophecy. His death did fulfill His Father’s will. Most important is what Jesus death did for us. His death and resurrection saves us from eternal death and resurrects us to eternal life if we confess our sins and ask Him into our heart.
When Jesus said, "It is finished", Jesus was saying the entire work of God's salvation was completed. The purpose for His coming to earth was done. The word "finished" is the same as "paid in full." Jesus death paid it all, all of our sin debt once and for all.
Our memory verse for this week is found in Matthew 28:6.
He is not here, for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
It is my prayer on this good Friday that my family will totally understand what You did for us by dying on the cross. We are grateful that You died to save us from our sins and even more grateful that You rose from the tomb and You are alive today. May others see Christ in us as we profess our salvation because of what You did for us.
